The plaintiff in the first-ever lawsuit filed against drug giants, such as Dr. Reddy’s, Sun Pharma, Teva, and others, have agreed to drop the case. The lawsuit was soon due for trial.

J. Bayer claimed to have developed cancer in his esophagus after the use of Zantac, which happens to be an over-the-counter drug.

Over-the-counter drugs or OTC drugs have been known to have side effects, more often than not, as they do not require a licensed physician to prescribe them. The drug Zantac has been marketed by Boehringer Ingelheim, Pfizer, a predecessor of GSK, Sanofi. All of these are pharmaceutical giants.

A report by Bloomberg news stated that drug makers and pharmaceutical companies including Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories Inc, Perrigo Co., Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd, and Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Inc. have reached a joint settlement of more than $500,000.

Former Zantac users have made claims that the drug manufacturers, such as GSK Plc and Pfizer, were fully aware of the capacity of the compound ranitidine, the main ingredient in Zantac, to turn into the carcinogen NDMA.

The lawsuit was set for trial in the State Court of Illinois coming Monday. More than a few thousand lawsuits have been consolidated into a Florida Federal Court. A hearing deciding what types of expert evidence will be made admissible is due on the 20th of September, this year.

Almost none of the big pharmaceuticals which once acted as the brand makers for the now-controversial drug have contributed to the settlement.
